About Smart Sustainable Cities
Smart Sustainable Cities is an exciting initiative launched by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) – bringing together selected leading European and UK cities, experts and innovators, to showcase best practice and provide an opportunity for knowledge sharing and networking.
The programme is packed with practical examples of projects in action, as well as expert speakers, discussion and opportunities to exchange ideas for UK and EU cities and businesses in these dynamic cities.
Smart Sustainable Cities: Glasgow
Driving innovation in the circular economy
Hosted in Glasgow, venue for UK COP26, this workshop programme focused on:
- shaping a vision for smart, circular cities;
- embedding citizen-centred digital innovation;
- driving innovation and systemic change across and within sectors;
- experiencing Glasgow city showcase and industry session, highlighting ground-breaking initiatives;
- sharing city initiatives and connecting with other city experts for practical knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Smart Sustainable Cities: Madrid
Transforming mobility in the low carbon city: smart, healthy solutions at city-system scale
This workshop programme focused on mobility and the transition to carbon-neutral and human-centred transport in cities. Hosted in Madrid, where the city centre is currently undergoing a radical transformation towards zero emissions. The lively and intimate workshop provided a hands-on opportunity for cities, businesses and experts to explore a range of themes, including:
- Whole systems change
- Last mile logistics
- Citizen engagement
Smart Sustainable Cities: Manchester
This 2-day workshop explored the question of Smart Electricity, Heat, Cooling and Storage Networks/Grids. Dynamic and intimate sessions with experts, cities and business as well as visits to key showcase initiatives in Manchester, providing the opportunity for cities to create ongoing links to enable them to achieve their Paris goals.
Smart Cities: London
The Smart Cities programme highlighted London’s smart and future living strategies, including:
- data management/data driven economy
- common ticketing systems
- Internet of Things
Sustainable Cities: Bristol
The Sustainable Cities programme showcased how Bristol, European Green Capital 2015, is integrating key interventions to improve the city as a place to live and work, with a focus on:
- energy efficiency in buildings
- smart grids and renewable energy
- circular economy.
